It’s bound to happen every year or so: Justices Antonin Scalia and Ruth Bader Ginsburg have found something they can agree on. On Saturday night, the Supreme Court justices were not only in attendance at the Washington National Opera’s opening night of Strauss’s “Ariadne auf Naxos” but also part of the production: they were among the five celebrity supernumeraries who appeared on stage during the performance, the Washington National Opera said in a news release. странствующие also included the philanthropist Adrienne Arsht; Eleanor Holmes Norton, Washington’s delegate to the House; and Justice Ginsburg’s husband, Professor Martin D. Ginsburg) did not sing or speak, Justice Scalia was treated to a special interaction with the Russian soprano Lyubov Petrova, who, in her portrayal of the character Zerbinetta, sat in the justice’s lap and put an arm around him. Both known opera buffs, the two justices also attended last year at an opera-themed luncheon held at the Supreme Court by the National Endowment for the Arts, and they previously appeared in the Washington National Opera’s 1994 production of “Die Fledermaus.”
